Location dependent properties of cartilage measured by ultrasound and indentation: Two case studies of ovine and minipig knee articular cartilage

چکیده

INTRODUCTION: The topographic analysis of cartilage mechanical properties has been of particular interest since it is known that physiological loading patterns differ with location in a synovial joint. Site-specific in vivo material characterization of articular cartilage has previously been performed using both ultrasound and indentation techniques [1-3]. Ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) uses high frequency acoustic waves that allow both, non-destructive three-dimensional visualization and assessment of mechanical properties. This method, has recently been applied for the evaluation of cartilage repair in a minipig model [4]. The goal of the present study was to investigate, if mechanical parameters derived by creep indentation correlate with site-matched parameters derived from UBM. Cartilage samples from two animal species (ovine and porcine) were thus investigated mechanically i.e. under creep indentation, as well as by means of ultrasound scanning. Specimens were scanned in US immediately after preparation, and subsequently biomechanically tested at the same locations.

The Effect of Mesenchymal Stem Cells and Aqueous Extract of Elaeagnus Angustifolia on the Mechanical Properties of Articular Cartilage in an Experimental Model of Rat Osteoarthritis

Introduction: Although, the effect of direct intra-articular injection of bone marrow stem cells (BMSCs) on the repair of articular cartilage and the effect of Elaeagnus angustifolia extract on pain relief in patients with osteoarthritis have been investigated, no studies has been conducted to compare the effects of these two therapeutic methods on the mechanical properties of articular cartila...

Experimental Study on Protective Role of NSAID on Articular Cartilage Destruction in Septic Arthritis

Background: Surgical drainage and antibiotic therapy are the cornerstones of treatment protocols in septic arthritis; however, in some circumstances, the diagnosis and initiation of treatment may be retarded by slow disease progression or the time when the patient’s condition precludes early surgery. Therefore, it is beneficial to find ways to reduce the amount of articular injury. This study a...

Mesenchymal stem cells can survive on the extracellular matrix-derived decellularized bovine articular cartilage scaffold

Objective (s): The scarcity of articular cartilage defect to repair due to absence of blood vessels and tissue engineering is one of the promising approaches for cartilage regeneration. The objective of this study was to prepare an extracellular matrix derived decellularized bovine articular cartilage scaffold and investigate its interactions with seeded rat bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (...

The accuracy and reliability of a novel handheld dynamic indentation probe for analysing articular cartilage.

This study investigates the accuracy and reliability of a novel handheld indentation system designed to ascertain the dynamic biomechanical properties of articular cartilage. A series of standard elastomers were assessed with both the handheld indentation system and a bench-top dynamic indentation system to assess the accuracy of the instrument. Interoperator and intraoperator experiments were ...

Conditioned medium derived from mesenchymal Stem cells regenerates’ defected articular cartilage

Background & Aims: One of cell- based technical issues associated with cartilage repair assay is delivering cells to the site of the parts where damage is created. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) with their chondrogenic potential are ideal candidates for cartilage regeneration. High expression of cartilage hypertrophy markers by MSCs would result in apoptosis and ossification. This investigation ...
